1 Mar 1818: Part of Ross attached
11 Jan 1839: Part attached to Ross
7 Feb 1843: Part of Pike attached and part attached to Pike
23 Mar 1850: Diminished by formation of Vinton. Part of Gallia attached

The first county seat in 1816, was in the town of Purgatory, renamed Poplar Row. In 1819, the county seat was moved to Jackson.

Federal Population schedules extant from 1820-1940. (1890 missing) Part of Jackson County was in Washington County, the only one extant for 1800.
