Evolution of county from date of formation until it assumed its final form
1 Apr 1850: Erected and organized

The first county seat, in 1851, was located in Ottokee. In 1869, the county seat was removed to Wauseon. In 1864, a courthouse fire destroyed records located in the Probate court as well as the Recorder's Office. Records do exist for the Clerk of Courts (Common Pleas). Land records were reconstructed from Barber's Abstracts. Some tax records were lost in the fire.

Federal Population schedules extant from 1830-1940. (1890 missing) The northern part of the county in 1820 was Monroe County, Michigan. These census records do exist.
